EICMA – Yamaha news, discover the new MT-07

The agile roadster opens a new chapter in MT history

In 2014 a new chapter in history opens MT, with the launch of the new Yamaha MT-07, an agile roadster with exuberant torque that expands the range yamaha mt. Its design, the character of the engine and the ability to emotionally involve the driver perfectly represent the "Hidden Side of Japan" of MT family.

The new 689 front facing twin cylinder cc delivers exceptional torque, and together with the light and compact single-beam tubular frame does of MT-07 a unique motorbike which has the declared aim of reawakening the desire for motorbikes in many riders from all over Europe, because it brings fun, passion and excitement back to the world of motorcycling. All at a reasonable price, but without giving up!

La new Yamaha MT-07 it is not a motorcycle that can be defined or classified only through its technical specifications. For the record, the data regarding this new model and that everyone will want to know immediately are: 74,8 HP, 68 Nm at 6.500 rpm and 179 kg of curb weight (dry weight 164 kg).

In reality, these numbers represent only a small part of the story MT, because MT-07 it wasn't just designed to be the fastest, the most powerful, the best handling or the most sophisticated. Simply, this motorbike was created to offer an entry level model capable of transmitting new emotions, through the delivery of torque and the design's ability to enhance pure passion, the one that drove all of us to approach motorcycling.

Yamaha MT-07 was designed to revive passion in the entry level motorcycle segment. The excitement you feel while riding and its easy-to-handle nature make it an extraordinary motorbike, with an unrivaled quality-price ratio.

The new MT-07 is dedicated to those who want a different approach to the world of two wheels. Newbies who are just getting into motorcycling and looking for a different type of sportbike will find that MT-07 it is beautiful to look at, offers intense sensations and is easy and fun to ride. Yamaha also think that more experienced riders looking for a versatile, compact and non-trivial fun bike will find in MT-07 a response that exceeds their expectations.

ENGINE

New 689cc forward-facing twin-cylinder – When they designed the basic architecture of the new engine, the technicians Yamaha they wanted to create a reactive and exciting engine, capable of enhancing the emotions felt by the driver in different situations. This bike is completely focused on the pure enjoyment you get from riding the bike every day.

So instead of focusing on getting big numbers for maximum horsepower and torque, they created a engine that delivers strong sensations, even if it is easy and intuitive to drive.

The ingredient that clearly separates the new forward-facing twin-cylinder of MT-07 from others it is the fact that it was developed according to the “crossplane” philosophy. An engineering concept that aims to enhance the characteristics of power delivery, thus offering a more predictable and instantaneous response. That's why this compact, lightweight sports car can be accessible and fun for riders of all types.

Powerful and compact in-line twin-cylinder with a wide and usable delivery band – Il new 689 cc 4-stroke DOHC liquid-cooled twin-cylinder with a 270° crankshaft, and inside it has a extraordinarily compact balance wheel. The engine was designed to obtain a power of 75 HP (55 kW), even with compact dimensions and low weight. In terms of performance and technical specifications, it is a engine that ranks at the top of the category.

On the other hand, with its torque qualities at low and medium revs, it delivers a supply that can be exploited in a variety of situations, from sports driving to leisure travel, up to the daily route to work.

“Crossplane” philosophy to enhance torque characteristics – Il new front-facing twin-cylinder of MT-07 it was designed to deliver reference performance, and at the same time it is an engine that has a formidable torque delivery but easy to control at low and medium rpm.

The goal of an easily manageable torque was mostly achieved adopting a layout inspired by the “crossplane” philosophy. It's a technology that tends to harmonize the different forces within the engine, the combustion torque (created by the ignition of the fuel) and the inertial torque (created by the rotation of the crankshaft and the up/down movement of the pistons). When these forces are well aligned (in this case we speak of "clean" torque) the pilot has a more precise feedback on power delivery and it can so better control both the power itself and the traction of the wheel rear, so simple and intuitive.

For an inline twin the most effective layout to obtain "clean" torque is the adoption of a 270° shaft with irregular bursts. While there phasing at 270° has proven its worth on twin-cylinder motorcycles such as TDM900 ed XT1200Z, the engine of Yamaha MT-07 it is even more fun because it combines ease of power control with exceptional driving dynamics, also thanks to the power delivery and low weight which are both records in the category. An engine with great character, with a unique exhaust sound.

Compact and lightweight balance shaft – The development team Yamaha took particular care to keep the overall weight of MT-07, significantly reducing that of each component. For example, the compact balance shaft is one of the lightest in the two-wheel panorama. By reducing the distance between the crankshaft and the balance shaft, the new design allows to reduce the dimensions of the engine. Together with the rubber engine mounts, the balance shaft reduces vibration, for a more comfortable ride.

Cylinder offset to reduce consumption – During the presentation to the press of MT-09 in September, many commented positively on the reduced consumption of the MT-09. Increasing combustion efficiency is important for several environmental, economic and practical reasons. And the technicians Yamaha they managed to contain consumption in an extraordinary way MT-07.

One of the key factors in being able to contain consumption is the reduction of power losses due to friction. Compared to conventional designs, cylinder offset reduces friction losses between piston and cylinder and transmits power more effectively.

Harmonized engine and transmission design – La devastating couple it is a “trademark” of all MT, and MT-07 it has been designed in such a way that the rider can accelerate and decelerate almost without changing gear, especially between the medium and high gears (from 4a at the 6a). Eliminating the need for frequent gear changes makes driving more rewarding, more relaxing and more fun. An experience that will be a very pleasant surprise for riders accustomed to medium-sized four-cylinder engines.

To optimize the potential of the linear torque delivered by MT-07, features such as the 6-speed transmission, the electronic injection setting and the mass of the crankshaft have been developed harmoniously, to create an engine that is exciting in performance but easy to manage.

Electronic injection – La new electronic injection with a compact fuel pump contributes greatly to shaping the driving characteristics of MT-07. In addition to offering excellent performance in a variety of conditions, this solution is very efficient and reduces consumption and therefore operating costs.

Other specifications that contribute to reducing consumption are the forged pistons and the “lens design” combustion chambers, as well as of course the offset of the cylinders.

Lightweight and compact 2-in-1 exhaust – Lo monolithic exhaust di MT-07 is inspired by the design adopted on MT-09, and presents a short and compact muffler in which the tubes, with sinuous lines, fit right under the engine. The line of the pipes gives a feeling of dynamism from every point of view, and in the muffler there is a compact 3-way catalyst. The system also features a oxygen sensor that exceeds the requirements of the EU3 regulation.

The compact exhaust is in line with the theme of mass centralization, typical of MT, which enhances the neutral character of the ride.

Also for those with an A2 driving license – MT-07 it is the perfect motorbike for all riders, even those with an A2 licence: since spring 2014 Yamaha in fact, it will make a depowering kit available at Official Dealers which will return it MT-07 in limit of 35 kW required by driving with a licence A2.
