The suspensions seem connected to the same distinctive concepts as the historical one BMW R 5, together with the double-sided swingarm and the Cantilever system of the rear suspension. Components which, together with the rigid frame and the metal parts of the bodywork, complete a new manifesto of classicism in the contemporary world. To get an idea of ​​the interesting result, just observe the precise mix between analogue solutions and new generation technology including the use of lights LED .
An essential, direct and customizable concept. The same design allows you to vary the basic appearance, giving space to something different and more distinctive. For example, the arrangement of the fixing points of the hydraulic lines of the brake, the cables and the clutch allow the introduction of different handlebars, more or less raised, together with the respective connections; but even the visible valve or belt covers are designed to be able to be replaced if necessary. Even the rear frame can be removed, as can the painted component set. The customization options are numerous and selectable from Original BMW Motorrad Accessories. Two collections of milled aluminum parts are being launched, developed in partnership with Roland Sands Design, called the “Machined” , “2-Tone-Black”.
But still speaking of accessories and customizations, in addition to the collaboration with Roland Sands Design, other famous names are mentioned, including the American saddlery specialist Mustang Seat e Vance & Hines expert in customizing the exhaust system.
At the launch, a version is introduced worldwide R 18 First Edition, alongside a standard model aimed at some markets, according to the indications. On the First Edition the connotative style of the R 18 is enriched by exclusive equipment, thanks to a black finish with paintwork featuring white piping. The chrome details are also varied, as are the specific logo on the saddle and the chrome plate with writing on the side "First Edition".

The position is favored by the footrests present “centrally located”, behind the cylinders. The total length reaches i 2.440 millimeters, the seat height on a standard version amounts to 690 mm, the tank welcomes 16 liters of fuel.
The steel frame has a double cradle structure with welded joints between the steel tubes and cast or forged parts, aesthetically echoing the tradition of the brand, together with a telescopic fork with fork cover and a solution cantilever rear with built-in axle, offering the effect of a rigid frame. The rear swingarm, as on the historic BMW R 5, embraces the rear drive axle through bolted joints. There are no electronic suspension adjustment options, but we highlight a directly present central suspension system with progressive damping and manageable spring preload.
The telescopic fork tubes are wrapped in fork covers and the diameter of the tube is 49 mm, while at the front the suspension travel reaches i 120 mm unlike the one behind 90 mm. The braking system includes a double disc brake at the front and a single disc at the rear 300 mm, along with a four-piston fixed caliper with partially integral BMW Motorrad Integral ABS, as highlighted. The action on the brake pedal concerns the rear area. Also highlighted are the spoked rims 19 inches in front and from 16 inches in the back.
Then list three driving modes (“Rain”, “Roll” e "Rock") and also a system ASC (Automatic Stability Control) can be excluded, strengthening driving safety, therefore also controlling the engine's driving torque (MSR). Options include an assisted reverse gear and a solution Hill Start Control to facilitate starting on uphill sections.
