The energy transition continues in the two-wheel sector too Honda has decided to give a decisive acceleration to electric. The Japanese company, in fact, has announced the introduction of 30 new models to zero emissions by 2030, the date by which it has set itself the objective of reaching 4 million units of global sales for electric motorcycles. Increasing the forecasts made in 2022.

Investment of over 3 billion

To develop the zero-emission sector, Honda announced a investment of 500 billion yen, i.e. over 3 billion euros, by 2030. In particular, a first tranche is already underway (100 billion yen between 2021 and 2025), but the most important investment will be made in the second half of the decade, when the Japanese company is ready to put another 400 billion yen on the table.

For 2031 and beyond, Honda will aim to achieve an operating profit margin of more than 10% in the electric motorcycle business and further increase the total profit amount.

Lower connectivity and costs

Connectivity is one of the features that will be significantly enhanced with electric motorcycles, thanks to which post-purchase software updates will be possible, including the addition of new functions, via OTA (over-the-air) or other formats. In this regard, future models, which will be launched from 2026, will have a new one telematic control unit.

La Japanese house he is also working on batteries. In addition to the ternary lithium-ion ones used in the electric models currently on the market, Honda is developing lithium iron-phosphate batteries (LFP) with the intention of adopting them in 2025. Thus being able to take an important step forward in terms of autonomy and costs.

In this regard, the house aims for one 50% reduction in cost of complete electric motorcycles, compared to the current cost of available electric models powered by interchangeable batteries. To this end, Honda will adopt plug-in models, optimize battery cells and increase efficiency in procurement and production.
