Yamaha XSR900: for 2022 a new symbiosis between innovation and tradition [PHOTO]

The new Yamaha XSR900 it is distinguishable by its modern and at the same time evocative design, combined with the most current technical and technological solutions.

The motorcycle

The aesthetics of this roadster it seems connected to the past, especially the 80s. An appeal also perceived by noting the colors and the technical part, albeit with current solutions. The side covers highlight a minimalist appearance, with hints of sportiness such as the racing-style fuel filler cap. The layout of the Deltabox frame it is lowered and the swingarm lengthened, so as to promote stability with optimized overall rigidity, given a different fixing of the swingarm.
Even the position makes you think back to the past, given a seat that stands out over the rear wheel, associated with the characteristics of the chassis part and the technological solutions that complete the picture. The tank from is also connotative 15 liters with dynamic air vents which, together with the saddle and the position of the handlebars, defines a riding position further back than the central point of the bike.
This new Sport Heritage model also features interesting details such as a dashboard set on a new triple clamp, handlebar end mirrors, an aluminum triple clamp, forged foot controls, black brake reservoirs, machined fork caps and an aluminum XSR logo.
The connotative features also include the round LED headlight with a shorter housing. Also highlighted are the headlight supports in brushed aluminum and a "hidden" LED rear light, located under the curvature of the saddle. The directional indicators are also LED type.

Technology

The model is equipped with a new display TFT in color from 3,5 inches, which takes the place of a previous circular LCD solution. The screen features a bar rev counter which changes color as the rpm increases and offers configurable secondary information. Using the handlebar controls it is possible to choose the most suitable driving mode. In total they are four D-Mode modes: mode 1 is the most performing, while modes 2, 3 and 4 represent increasingly fluid degrees of response.
Among the technological solutions to support the motorcyclist, we also highlight: a standard programmable Cruise Control and a six-axis inertial measurement unit (IMU), which uses two sensors to monitor speed and acceleration on three axes. This is a new, more compact and lighter unit and transmits data to the ECU that informs the three assistance devices: a wheelie control system (LIF), a skid control system (SCS) and a sensitive traction control system to the fold.
Moving on to the brake control system, this prevents accidental locking of the wheels. The BC1 is a standard ABS mode solution that acts in emergency stopping situations in a standing position, while the BC2 is designed to maintain control when emergency braking occurs when leaning or in the center of a curve.
We also note the presence of an R1 type position sensor (APSG) connected to the Yamaha Chip Controlled Throttle (YCC-T). A “ride by wire” system equipped with a sensor in the grip that reproduces the traditional feel of the accelerator spring. Just as interesting is the presence of a Quick Shift System (QSS) electronic gearbox, allowing the selection of upper and lower gears without acting on the clutch.

Technology

The model features a new Deltabox aluminum frame. A compact structure with low weight, developed with technology Yamaha Controlled Filling (CF). Increased levels of longitudinal, lateral and torsional rigidity in favor of stability; furthermore, the steering head is placed 30 mm lower than the previous example and, considering other interventions, there is a 14% reduction in inertia around the steering axis.
Stability is also highlighted by the presence of an aluminum swingarm, 55 mm more extended than the previous model, also considering a wheelbase of 1.495 mm. The suspension part includes an adjustable KYB USD fork, with a gold color finish. The linkage rear suspension then includes a forward-leaning KYB shock absorber.
The high-performance braking system is equipped with a new cutting-edge Brembo radial pump, considering double discs 298 mm. Furthermore, via a forged brake pedal it is possible to recall the action of the rear disc from 245 mm.
The picture is completed by 10-spoke SpinForged aluminum wheels with a lighter weight of 700 g compared to the previous figure.

Engine and transmission

The new Yamaha XSR900 is equipped with one unit CP3 engine da 889 cc more powerful. A larger displacement engine (+43 cc) which, compared to the previous heart, is characterized by a 3 mm longer excursion. The main internal components have been redefined and lightened, so the weight of the engine (excluding exhaust) is reduced by 300 g.
The distinctive sound of the new exhaust system is the result of the work of Yamaha team members after thousands of kilometers on winding roads. The new exhaust includes different lengths of the bilateral chambers and together with the design of the air intake ducts, the sound offered to the rider is characteristic.
Also highlighted is a new A&S clutch for torque management, an anti-hopping solution refined with different friction plates, furthermore the angle of the clutch cams has gone from 30 degrees to 33 degrees. Just as the six-speed gearbox has been optimized with new transmission gears.
An increase in power of up to four horsepower is highlighted 119 horses (87,5 kW) at 10.000 rpm, while the torque increases by 6% up to 93,0 Nm (9,5 kgf-m) at 7.000 rpm, i.e. 1.500 rpm less than the previous example.

Deliveries of the model to Yamaha dealers will begin from April 2022. The new Yamaha XSR900 will be available in liveries Legend Blue, cyan and yellow with gold fork and wheels, then in Midnight Black with red tones, fork and controls in black tone.
