Yamaha Tricity 155: the three-wheeler suitable for everyone and also for the motorway [ROAD TEST]

The new three-wheeler from Iwata wins over its customers thanks to its intelligence, maneuverability and comfort

Yamaha Tri City 155 - Among Yamaha's new features in 2017, we certainly find the Tricity 155, which joins the 125, which was presented only two years ago, but which has undoubtedly been improved, especially with regards to comfort and some other gems, which we have reserve the opportunity to discover with our road test

The Tricity range therefore returns, as can be seen from the name, enriched by a new displacement, over 125, so as to allow the small three-wheeled scooter to also be able to tackle ring roads and motorways and, consequently, not to stick only to the exclusive city use, as for its younger brother 125.
The Tricity 155 basically has 4 watchwords: intelligence, practicality, comfort and space. It is in fact a scooter that reserves all the confidence and comfort necessary for those who ride it, making it one of the most practical vehicles especially for the city, where every small detail proves fundamental.

Aesthetics and finishes:

rating: ★★★★☆

Compact and slender, it almost hides the second front wheel

Aesthetically, the Iwata scooter appears compact, with slender and aerodynamic lines. The appearance of the Tricity 155 has been improved, also thanks to a new Full LED headlight which gives it a refined, modern, elegant, but above all sophisticated appearance. The braking system appears extremely advanced with ABS as standard and an integrated braking system (UBS) with efficient, modular and safe stops. The double seat is comfortable for both the rider and the passenger and the compartment underneath it allows you to carry personal effects or store a full-face helmet. In the front compartment behind the shield there is also a 12 V socket. From the first moment, we can appreciate the streamlined and slender aesthetics of the Tricity 155 and, once we get on the saddle, it is impossible not to immediately consider the comfort that characterizes it, with a wide saddle and extremely comfortable to sit on. The new full LED headlight appears modern and extremely bright, which is a significant asset for extra-urban use in the absence of adequate lighting.

The underseat compartment is not extremely large, but it allows you to store a full-face helmet, or a jet and some small personal objects. The front compartment behind the shield appears very useful and comfortable, also due to the presence of the 12 V socket, perfect for charging the phone.

Engine and performance:

rating: ★★★★☆

Blue Core 155 ring road proof

The Yamaha scooter shows itself with a new engine, a 4 cc 155-stroke, with Blue Core technology, which is able to increase cooling and combustion efficiency, while reducing power losses, to ensure faster acceleration , but also reduced consumption. It certainly has excellent and better performance than the 125, setting its maximum torque and power values at 14,4 Nm (at 6 thousand rpm) and 15 horsepower (11,1 kW) respectively. The power is precisely what the code imposes as a maximum for those under 125, demonstrating a rule that always raises some doubts, but which remains so for now. The Tricity 155 can enter the motorway, another scooter with the same power but a displacement of less than 125 cannot. Coming back to us, even in this configuration the Tricity is a scooter suitable for everyone, including beginners, who want or need the use of a vehicle that is efficient and reliable in terms of engine and that is able to be used in any situation and eventuality. In fact, the Tricity 155 appears to be the perfect vehicle for commuters, newbies and otherwise, or for all those who seek comfort, easy handling and intelligence at their service.

Ride and handling:

rating: ★★★★½

The safety of three wheels without losing maneuverability

Its ease of driving and handling has established itself, characteristics that were already highlighted with the 125 and fundamental above all for urban use. The riding position is comfortable and the fairing protects from the air even in situations of poor protection from it. The city turns out to be the natural habitat of the Tricity 155, in which it manages to show off its qualities, among which agility stands out, given above all by the light and compact frame, making the driving experience satisfying. The three-wheeled scooter from Yamaha features a 13-inch rear wheel and extra-wide 130/70 tyre, allowing excellent traction on different types of roads and two close-set front wheels, which give it greater stability and dexterity especially in traffic. Already from the first kilometres, once switched on, we can notice its agility when driving, as well as the easy handling that distinguishes it during any type of manoeuvre: its 165 kg in running order seem not to be felt, leaving room for dexterity and easy handling. which distinguish the three-wheeled vehicle from the Iwata company.

Ring roads and motorways are best tackled above all thanks to the presence of the fairing and the great stability that the two front wheels give to the scooter; Despite this, we especially appreciated the short sections, given the cruising speed that the horses available to the vehicle put on the field, sufficient to move even in extra-urban contexts, but especially perfect for the city. It is precisely these small sections that allow commuters to reach their workplace more easily and comfortably, without having to use the subway, bus or tram.

Even in situations of adverse weather conditions, the Tricity performed admirably, always underlining its great stability, with the peculiarity of being able to instill safety in those who find themselves driving it. Braking, assisted by the ABS system, always appears moderate and reliable, constantly accompanied by the presence of the standard ABS which intervenes if necessary.

Price and consumption:

Park and offered at an attractive price, soon also in sharing in Milan and Rome
Yamaha_Tricity_155_pss_2017_08

With a declared figure of just 2.5 liters per 100 km travelled, the Tricity promises to be very economical in its use. In our test we had confirmation in this sense, while the 7,2 liter tank allows you to travel a long way before having to refuel again, over 250 kilometres. The Blue Core engine is really very efficient, as well as brilliant. The Tricity 155, available from November 2016, has a weight of 165 kg in running order and has the possibility of being customized through the range of accessories made available by Yamaha. The colors available are Cyber Blue, Oxford Gray and Milky White. As mentioned, the Iwata scooter turns out to be the perfect combination of simplicity, manageability, agility and accessibility, also in economic terms with a retail price of 4.390 euros. In Spring 2018 it will also be possible to use the Zig Zag Sharing service in Milan, which will then be further consolidated in Rome with new initiatives; the service will be able to reward the best customers, giving the first 30 users a rental with 30 minutes free every month, which can be used at any time. As early as July, however, a contest will start with credits for use up for grabs: the more rentals you make, the more credits you accumulate and the more minutes of service you win.
