Yamaha R7: a new generation of Supersport presented [PHOTO]

Maximum power of 73,4 horsepower, EU5 compliance

The new Yamaha R7, considering the name, recalls the exclusive superbike YZF-R7 limited edition (500 copies). The design of this new model appears distinctive, designed to capture the attention of a young audience. A streamlined aesthetic that anticipates a strong character, typical of the examples in the range R Series.

Gritty appearance

Looking at the bike, the overall compactness is immediately evident, considering a minimalist frame and a heart CP2 equally compact. Aspects that have favored the creation of a slim and aerodynamic line.
The dimensions of the frontal area are contained to the advantage of overall efficiency. The light configuration also stands out “twin eyes” with position lights a LED and an air intake system that resembles the shape of an M with a single LED headlight appearing embedded in the air duct. Also highlighted is a new deflector located at the base of the intake nozzle.
This sleek, sporty and compact vision is complemented by lightweight 10-spoke alloy wheels paired with a front tire 120 / 70ZR17 and another rear 180 / 55ZR17.

Setting and technique

As mentioned, the compact and athletic profile is peculiar and functional in this project, thinking about the control of the bike. Also interesting is the curb weight 188 kg.
The bike features a backbone frame designed to support reactive and agile dynamism. It highlights a central body in aluminum and a high-strength steel frame, using tubes of variable resistance in key positions optimizing the balance of rigidity, as reported.
The riding position is purely Supersport exemplary with the adoption of a clip-on handlebar, after evaluations on different configurations between handlebar/saddle/footpegs and obtaining a sporty position but adaptable to several different riding situations, ranging between practicable routes or circuits. Also highlighted is the design of the saddle which is narrow around the inside of the thigh and wider towards the back, promoting freedom of movement. A saddle with padding on the upper part of the tail, also being able to adopt an optional original Yamaha seat cover. To this we must add the extension of the handlebars, the angle of inclination, the shape of the tank with accentuated recesses and the positioning of the footrests.

The new suspension part includes a KYB fork from 41 millimeters which promotes grip and stability. A fork adjustable in compression and rebound, acting respectively on the left stem or right stem.
The specifications propose an angle of 23,7% with a trail of 90 mm, evaluating a wheelbase of 1.395 mm and weight distribution 51/49 anterior/posterior considering.
Furthermore, a new Monocross linkage system is included, designed to take into account the energetic character of the model. The horizontal arrangement of the cushioning then favors the centralization of the masses, also taking into account a functional adjustment of preload and rebound.
Moving on to the braking system, which is powerful and consistent, it is equipped with 4-piston radial calipers. There is also a Brembo radial pump up front that provides linear braking pressure, as indicated.

Engine and dynamic thrust

The engine that powers this new Supersport is a unit Yamaha CP2 da 689 cc. The interventions include a new ECU, a revised exhaust design, a new fuel injection setting and refined intake ducts. All functional aspects also obtaining EU5 compliance. The new Yamaha R7 then features a slightly shortened gear ratio.
You can choose an optional electronic shifter (QSS), which can be ordered from your Yamaha dealer. A solution with a cell positioned on the shift rod. Once the engagement of a higher gear has been detected, the ECU removes energy from the transmission for a few milliseconds, allowing faster and more constant engagement of higher gears, to the benefit of acceleration.
Also interesting is the adoption of an anti-slipper clutch (A&S) which is always functional for gear changes, preventing the rear wheel from hopping in the event of violent braking. Furthermore, the lever operation appears softer, as indicated, approximately 33% less than a standard solution.
Returning to the liquid-cooled 2-cylinder, 4-valve DOHC engine, taking into account a 270° crankshaft which favors an irregular firing sequence, the power developed is 73,4 horses (54 kW) at 8.750 rpm with a torque peak of 67 Nm at 6.500 rpm.
