Yamaha: a new YZ450F among the cross and enduro models for 2023Yamaha: a new YZ450F among the cross and enduro models for 2023

The path of Yamaha in the various classes of off-road competitions is demonstrated by the varied range of motorbikes for riders who are passionate about cross and enduro, without forgetting the line of models aimed at very young people, including the PW50. Based on recent updates, the motocross da 65 cc, 85 cc, 125 cc e 250 cc and those from enduro da 250 cc e 450 cc they are characterized by new graphics. Furthermore, with a view to 2023, there has been a focused development of Yamaha YZ450F, an entirely new model, improved from a performance point of view and with a lighter weight.

The range

Starting with the very young, the PW50 2-stroke it is a motorbike for little ones who are approaching the discipline, equipped with brake levers mounted on the handlebars, shaft transmission and automatic gearbox. There is also Yamaha's TT-R range aimed at boys and girls of different ages. The TT R50, TT R110 e TT R125 have engines 4-stroke air-cooled.
The proposal for the more adult audience consists of 2 and 4 stroke models, ranging from YZ65 to the mentioned YZ450F, without forgetting the motorbikes enduro WR-F.
La YZ65 allows young riders to debut in the world of motocross, as well as the YZ85 represents another reference proposal in competitions where future talents are protagonists.
In the context of 2-stroke examples, Yamaha is known by its models YZ125 e YZ250, among the best performing in their respective categories. These are easy-to-handle and lively bikes, two cross bikes with a low weight and well-known among enthusiasts of 2-stroke models. Just as it represents a reference YZ250F, recalling Maxime Renaux's success in the 2 MX2021 Championship. A bike for riders who aim high and powered by a 250cc 4-stroke inverted head unit, combined with a lightweight aluminum frame.
Moving on to enduro bikes Yamaha WR250F e WR240F, these are models that derive from the motocross project but present specific aspects for enduro competitions, including dedicated mapping and cooling solutions, different intake and exhaust systems and a type of long-ratio gearbox.
Furthermore, the development of GYTR® components and kits high performance tires verified by the Yamaha Racing teams and proposed for better preparation of the models in view of sporting events.
Speaking of figures, for the models YZ125, YZ250 e YZ250F available based on the model from August 2022, the list prices indicated are: YZ125 8.199,00 euros fc; YZ250 8.799,00 euros fc and YZ250F 9.399,00 euros fc

The new 450 Yamaha YZ2023F

An evolution characterized by a new bodyshell, a new lightweight chassis, as well as the new engine being lighter and more powerful. We note a total reduction in the weight of 2,3 kg, reaching i 109 kg in running order with full tank.
The new "Horizontal Movement" body offers a more stretched and streamlined vision. Each external panel has been redefined, resulting in a slimmer body and also characterized by a rounded finish that facilitates movement. The triangulation composed of saddle, handlebar and footrests has also been redefined, changed to obtain an ideal riding position, taking into account the different sizes of the riders. The height of the saddle, characterized by a flat surface, has been increased by 5 millimeters and the rounded profile of the sides favors lateral movements of the body.
The handlebar can be adjusted to 4 positions and has been moved to facilitate a more natural riding position, comfort is also supported by rubber supports. The footpegs have been placed 5mm lower, resulting in a total increase in space of 10mm for tall riders.
Among the highlighted aspects are also a compact front fender and a new shorter rear fender, thus a flatter horizontal profile with a shorter distance between the front and rear. The look is also completed by new side covers and new fork protectors. From a technical point of view, a narrower central section, a new air supply path with exclusion of the front air ducts, thus a much smaller cladding installation with a reduced width of 50 mm and a new tank are also highlighted of the more consolidated fuel.

Technique and technology

Always considering the needs of each rider, Yamaha technicians paid attention to the setting of the new double-spar aluminum frame, in order to obtain benefits in terms of handling and weight. The qualities of the structure are linked to factors such as the balance of the rigidity of each component, the interaction between them and the geometry. Now the new frame It features a 4mm steel front thruster mount with three thru-axles, compared to the previous 8mm aluminum solution with a single thru-axle.
Among the most interesting factors for 2023 is the relocation of the connection brackets between the frame and cylinder head, now 15 mm lower than previously seen. The crossbar under the tank has also been lowered in the same way. Other interventions concern the increase in rigidity and more area referred to the swingarm pivot area.
The analysis on all parts was functional to contain the weight of the new one YZ450F and make it one of the lightest bikes in its respective category. As mentioned: a weight of just 109 kg in running order, a reduction of 2,3 kg. A fact linked to mass centralization, considering elements such as a new airbox, a new fuel pump and a new chain guide. Even the smallest elements contribute to the result, including the switches attached to the handlebars, the water pump impeller and the accelerator cable.
From a technological point of view, there is also aupdated Power Tuner app with an intuitive and quick setup function, for smoother interaction. This includes new functions, different data including rev counter, fuel consumption or speed. There is also a support page on frequently asked questions regarding the suspension part. Also highlighted is a new adjustable traction control system with two levels of assistance, as well as a third deactivation function.
The system is managed via the Power Tuner app which allows the rider to select the degree of intervention, taking into account the different conditions of use. Furthermore, the Launch Control System with a new one “Rev limit” function which can be set to a speed between 6.000 rpm and 11.000 rpm in increments of 500 rpm. The moment the Launch Control System detects a completed start, the Rev limit function is automatically deactivated, when third gear is engaged the Launch Control System is deactivated, according to the indications.
Moving on to the suspension part, the new valves increase absorption performance and traction levels. Depending on the setup, there is a compression damping adjuster that can be activated manually, also remembering the advice and information that can be consulted via the Power Tuner app.
Also highlighted is a new hose that improves the action of the rear brake, a crucial element when changing direction and entering corners, with stability and control in mind.

Propulsive part

The engine of the new Yamaha YZ450F has been redefined entirely. A lighter heart designed to improve traction and handling. For superior durability it features a refined cooling system and a new dry sump lubrication system. Also new are a reconfigured connecting rod, a chain tensioner and a timing chain.
The action of the front air intake is improved through a redefined inlet duct, considering a straighter passage to the cylinder head and the use of 39 mm titanium intake valves (a larger diameter), which increase the intake volume of air by 9% at maximum valve opening. The shape of the exhaust port is also different to obtain a smoother passage.
The passage of the air intake has also changed, now the fresh air flows along a space between the tank, frame, saddle and side panels. An air flow that also prevents the entry of water, dust and mud into the airbox, according to information.
The efficiency of the airbox is linked to a vortex that separates the dust from the incoming air thanks to centrifugal forces, before entering the triple-state filter, as highlighted again on this occasion.
The inverted cylinder head engine features an optimized combustion chamber, a newly developed piston and a lighter cylinder. In view of the increased rev limit of 500 rpm, the new engine is equipped with a high-precision, low-friction camshaft chain. The crankshaft assembly and connecting rod have also been redesigned, and a new and efficient lighter bearing takes the place of the previous needle element. Also highlighted is a new single counterweight with a new hollow countershaft.
Finally, given the5% overall power increase, the gearbox has also been reconfigured. The previous two-part steel/aluminium clutch has been replaced by a one-piece example in lighter (the weight is less than 0,75 kg) and more resistant steel, equipped with a flat spring instead of the coil ones.
Wider the distance between the drive shafts as the diameter of each gear to contain the weight and strengthen the resistance of the 5-speed gearbox, as indicated.
