Volvo – Volvo, the Swedish car manufacturer based in Gothenburg, has developed a new innovative tech which warns drivers of presence of cyclists and, therefore, motorcyclists nearby.

The system designed by Volvo Cars uses a smartphone application which allows you to monitor the driver's position in relation to a car. When the two are at collision risk the driver is notified via a head-up display, while the pilot will see in turn a light through his helmet. A spokesperson for the Scandinavian automaker said the system could warn motorcycle drivers in a timely manner and thus help resolve so-called SMIDSY incidents, so called because drivers who cause them commonly say “Sorry mate, I didn't see you”. Sorry buddy, didn't see you.

The technology developed by Volvo could, therefore, warn both motorcyclists and cyclists. “Right now the technology is only in its concept phase, but I don't think it will be limited to just cyclists. We would like to try to use it elsewhere and therefore also help other vulnerable road users, such as motorcyclists.", added the Volvo Cars spokesperson.

The concept is the result of an all-Swedish partnership between Volvo, Ericsson and cycle helmet maker Poc. The road safety system could already be presented during one of the most important technology fairs in the world, the CES of Las Vegas, scheduled in the state of Nevada, in the United States of America, from 6 to 9 January 2015.
