Reduce motorway tolls for motorbikes: the Government supports ANCMA's request

Progress is made for the initiative proposed by ANCMA on the reduction of motorway tolls for motorbikes

After years of hard work by Confindustria Ancma, the Government officially embraces the request to differentiate motorway pricing between cars and motorbikes. Italy remains the only European country where the same motorway tariff as an SUV is applied for two-wheeled vehicles.

For years Confindustria ANCMA has been fighting to change the logic of payments motorway with a differentiation between auto e motorcycle.
According to the National Motorcycle Cycle and Accessories Association, with a reduction in toll costs, motorcyclists would be encouraged to use motorways as an itinerary for their journeys to the full advantage of the safety of the centaurs.
In fact, according to the most recent data provided by ACI/ISTAT, a motorcyclist involved in an accident has almost twice as likely to survive if the accident occurs on a highway rather than on another extra-urban road: for every 100 motorcyclists involved in an accident, there are 3,5 victims on the motorway, while on provincial, regional or state roads the ratio rises to 6,2, despite the cruising speeds on the motorways is superior.
In the last four years, 577 motorcyclists have lost their lives on motorways, while on extra-urban roads there have been 1.260 victims on two wheels.

The Undersecretary for Infrastructure and Transport, Umberto Del Basso De Caro, announced yesterday to the Chamber's Transport Committee that, at the request of trade associations, has activated a technical table with AISCAT (the trade union association that brings together motorway concessionaires), pointing out that the Ministry itself, last 5 July, had sent AISCAT itself a proposal for a differentiated tariff for motor vehicles.

“Every motorcyclist who chooses a state or provincial road rather than a motorway to save on tolls – declares Corrado Capelli, President of Confindustria ANCMA – exposes himself to an almost double risk of losing his life in the event of an accident. Incentivize motorcyclists to use motorways which, as stated by the dealers themselves, are the safest roads, it is a necessity that cannot be further extended".
