Confindustria ANCMA (Motorcycle Accessories Association), in commenting on the progress of the bicycle market in 2022 dropped by 10% compared to the previous year, highlights a “physiological slowing down”, in addition to “complex global paradigm shift” also present in the pedal two-wheeler sector, taking into account supply difficulties, geopolitical issues and increased costs.

Industrial indicators confirm themarket trend, with a positive figure of 10% for the production of e-bike compared to the previous year, in light of the increase in domestic demand. However, national production fell by 18%. muscle bikes, with 2.385.000 units. Data which still highlights the primacy of the Italian industry in the pedal two-wheeler sector in Europe. Despite indicating a 20% decrease in exports of muscle bikes and 14% in imports, 2022 was characterized by a general increase in the values ​​of these items, in particular when talking about imports of components which increased by approximately 50%. Argument that led ANCMA to highlight, in recent discussions with the Government and also considering the EU industrial strategy, support for the processes of restoring, that is, bringing the production of parts back to Italy and Europe, precisely because of the economic and strategic importance of the sector.
Returning to the market data, 2022 bicycles were sold in 1.772.000. E-bikes grew by 14% in light of the 337.000 units indicated; a 72% increase from 2019 compared to a 15% decline for muscle bikes with 1.435.000 pieces purchased.
The turnover produced by specialized shops increases, in which over 68% of purchases are made, as well as by large-scale distribution and online sales, which overall reaches 3,2 billion euros, +18% on 2021 and +52% compared to 2019.
The type of bike purchased also highlights the success of some of the latest trends, as in the panorama of pedal-assisted vehicles where 52% of the vehicles are e-city, 43% e-mtb, 4% e-corsa/gravel and the grouping of e-cargoes reaches 1%. E-bikes occupy 19% of the overall bicycle market, of which 29% is represented by mountain bikes, 26% by city trekking, 15% by vehicles intended for young people, 8% by racing types. gravel and 2% from folding, according to the data.
