Lampa Action-Cam 3 4K, the quality of the big ones, the price is not [REVIEW and VIDEO]

A commendable quality/price ratio, not only for the rich accessory kit

It confirms the very complete accessory kit, adds 4K, higher video quality and a useful remote control

Lampa Action Cam 3 – Last year we tested the Lampa Action-Cam Plus in the field, in the Full HD 1080 version (here is the link to the video review), finding it an excellent product, especially in terms of quality/price ratio. This year we returned to the field, again with a Lampa action camera, but we made a leap to the next level, in every sense. The product is in fact the Lampa Action Cam 3, 4K camera with remote control and accessory kit which represents the top of the range from Lampa. The novelty is also linked to the field of our test, because we moved from a "cycling" test to a motorcycle one, using it in some of our top early season tests. If last year we also used the Lampa Action-Cam Plus for some video footage of car and motorbike tests, we did the same this year, but the result was so positive that it became the action camera for the most important tests, including new ones on the track and on the road Aprilia RSV4 RF and Tuono 1100 MY2017, even during a course session #bearacer Acedamy, as well as the road test of the renewed one Suzuki V-Strom 650XT.

The reasons are linked to a decidedly higher quality of recordings than its younger sister Action-Cam Plus Full HD 1080, which for its part appeared good, but showed its limits in recordings at maximum resolution, while it was excellent going down to 720p at 60fps . But unfortunately, in our usage, the 1080 format has become the bare minimum to be able to edit videos of our tests, which makes the Action-Cam Plus Full HD an excellent product for amateurs, but not for professional use like ours. The 4K version, however, was able to convince us 100%, providing results worthy of the best competition, which however in some cases also charges 2 or 3 times the price of this excellent Lampa. Imagine that some shots taken with the Action-Cam 3 4K ended up in a cinema-quality video that we recently produced for a car manufacturer, without disfiguring at all compared to the rest of the footage, created with equipment costing thousands and thousands of euros.

Let's take a step back and describe the characteristics of the Action-Cam 3 4K, also comparing it with its younger sister. First of all, the package contains a very rich kit of accessories, similar to the two, which includes an anti-shock and waterproof case up to 30 meters, with interchangeable cover, as well as a multitude of connections, joints and bands to be able to mount the device in any position. There is also no shortage of attachments with 3M double-sided adhesive, perfect for motorbikes, especially on the track (the only way to be able to take the classic shot of the rider from behind, in "MotoGP" style). It would have been useful the sucker in some cases, only accessory missing from the kit, but you can use the dedicated ones with the most famous Action Cam on the market, which are also 100% compatible with the Lampa. Externally the camera is practically identical to its younger sister, it is quite well finished and appears robust, a fundamental characteristic for this type of product.

The battery, from 900 mAh of the Action-Cam Plus in Full HD 1080 version, switches to 1050 mAh, to respond to the greater absorption of 4K shooting, maintaining autonomy unchanged at 1,5 hours declared in operation. The display the rear is the same, always 2.0", but this time he is assisted by a Wi-Fi Remote Control; simple, essential and robust, it is a very useful accessory to be able to take photos or start and stop video recording, even from a distance. Using a strap present in the accessory kit, you can attach it to your wrist, like a watch, or store it in a pocket. It only has two buttons, one dedicated to photos and one to filming all it lacks is a confirmation LED, which we would have found useful to know for sure that the Action-Cam 3 is recording. This time we did not use the Wi-Fi connection via smartphone and tablet, because it is rather complex to do on a motorbike, which, as we had the opportunity to highlight, is sometimes not stable and is perhaps the only flaw of this Lampa action cam . The remote control, however, is excellent, we tested it from inside the car, even positioning the camera on the "support" car for filming, up to about ten meters away, without ever having "missed" a start or stop of the video.

From the point of view of characteristics, the aspects related to the slot for remain identical Micro SDHC memory (not included, managed up to a maximum of 32 GB), as well as the170° wide angle lens. Registration can go up to 4K Ultra HD at 25 fps, or go down to 2.7K with 30 fps, in both cases the shots remain fluid and there are no quality problems. These would be evident when you go to edit, especially "assembling" shots taken even with high-end equipment. The Action Cam 3 instead he brought to the table some very good colours, fluidity and quality. The audio isn't bad either, you can hear it for example in the on board carried out on the track with the Aprilia RSV4 RF MY2017, while to be picky, all that's missing is an audio input for an external microphone.

A product which, it seems almost needless to say, we feel we can promote with praise, also in light of a price which today is around 150 euros, all included. A note deservesinvoluntary test to which we subjected her, hitting her with the car, after the (third-party) suction cup we were using “gave up”. The Lampa ended up under one of the wheels and emerged almost unscathed. Some scratches on the case, which then forced us to remove the front cap to protect the optics, but which once removed allowed us to continue using it without problems (obviously now it is no longer waterproof though).
