The BMW S 1000 RR takes center stage in Padua. The world of electronics travels on two wheels

BMW Motorrad meet Prof.'s engineering students. Victor Cossalter, Professor of Vehicle Dynamics at the Department of Mechanical and Management Innovation of the University of Padua


Electronics was born as a safety aid for modern cars and motorbikes. This is particularly true for super sports bike riders who today reach specific powers in the order of 100 HP/litre, difficult to manage by normal users without the aid of electronics.
La BMW S1000RR – the subject of the analysis – was BMW Motorrad's first sports bike, and is currently the most powerful motorcycle in production. Thanks to the refined electronics it is also the safest super sports car on the market.
Electronics obviously have their own racing declination, aimed at obtaining maximum performance in competitions.
During the meeting with the students of the University of Padua, thanks to the presence and contribution of Eng. Gerardo Acocella, Technical Director of the BMW Motorrad Italia SBK Team, it was possible to analyze how electronics help the rider in a competitive environment, allowing on the one hand to analyze the behavior of the motorbike through telemetry and on the other to enhance its performance.
In fact, the electronics allow you to manage and control some fundamental parameters relating to delivery and power, but also adapting the intervention of the traction control according to the rider's driving needs and the type of each circuit.

During the meeting, Eng. Acocella explained to the over 300 students present:
• The electronics that equip the road motorcycle
• The electronics that equip the racing bike
• The network of on-board sensors
• The acquisition and processing of telemetry data
Finally, the Team DT explained how to interpret the data and define the race strategy and the setup of the bike.
