Kymco X-Town 125i CBS, the "B license" flagship from the Taiwanese company [ROAD TEST]

Protective and practical, suitable for both the city and outside

Kymco X-Town 125i CBS - the Taiwanese company offers a product with an aggressive and "voluminous" look, useful both for the city and for medium-range trips, it has a unique load capacity in its category, with a convenient storage compartment equipped with a USB socket

Presented at the Eicma Show in Milan in 2015, the X-Town family, in addition to its bigger brother 300i ABS, has a "B license", identical in size, but equipped with a 125 cc engine, which makes it perfect for all those who are looking for a comfortable scooter, of large dimensions and ready for also for extra-urban use, but who do not have an A driving license, or who still want to remain under the 125 cc threshold.
We picked it up at the dealership MGmoto of Cormano, to begin our test on the streets of Milan and beyond, discovering that the smallest of the X-Towns, the 125i CBS, is a refined scooter capable of high comfort, both for the rider and the passenger, thanks to the rich standard equipment and a load capacity that is unique in its category. The instrumentation, which is very complete and readable, even while driving, includes indications of the external temperature and the battery voltage.

Raising the saddle you access a compartment capable of hosting two helmets, one full-face and one jet. There is still some space left over, which can be used for a rain suit (of course if you have it with you it will never rain, rest assured), or for other small objects. Furthermore, it is also equipped with a USB socket in the front compartment, very useful for charging your mobile phone.

Aesthetics and finishes:

rating: ★★★★½

An attractive line, complete equipment

That the small (displacement only) X-Town scooter is intelligent, is made evident by many details, among which the LED headlights stand out, with the rear made personal and easily recognizable by the "X" shape, which identifies the model of the Taiwanese company.

In its aesthetics, the X-Town does not betray its small displacement and instead looks like a maxi scooter, with all the advantages of the case. High quality, refined finishes and generous dimensions, with a length of 2.235 mm and a width of 795.

The narrow handlebar allows it to limit its size and be perfect for city traffic, but the fairing is nice and wide and offers perfect protection for the legs, as well as a "scooter" appeal. Tense and streamlined lines, which together with the LED light clusters give it a modern and captivating, sporty and elegant appearance.

Practicality is evident in details such as the USB socket in the glove compartment, or in an under-seat compartment with record capacity, as well as in the presence, as standard, of a luggage rack plate to secure any top cases, with the original ones ranging from 34 up to 47 liters and which can also have a practical backrest for the passenger.

Engine and performance:

A 125 cc Euro 4, compact but lively

As soon as you set off, the sensation of total control of the scooter is immediate, the It is a horizontal cylinder, to limit its dimensions and leave more space under the saddle, which exploits almost all the power that an engine of this displacement can reach (the 4 kW limit is dictated by law). The variator makes the engine work more often. To facilitate cold starts, Kymco has also adopted an automatic centrifugal valve lifter device.

The first kilometers we travel, from the MGmoto dealership in Cormano towards the city centre, are on fast roads, where we can appreciate the discreet reach of the X-Town, capable of a maximum speed declared at 98 km/h, but which is much higher than what is indicated by the instrument. If it is true that it is still a 125 with a nice size of 183 kg, it handles traffic really well, above all it has no hesitations when overtaking, where all it takes is a touch of gas on the accelerator, but not even in the fastest driving does it feel too the lack of power and greater displacement. If it weren't for the legal limitations, it would also be perfect for short trips on the motorway or for a stretch of ring road.

Ride and handling:

rating: ★★★★½

Handy and easy, perfect both in the city and outside

The shape, with a significant size of the well-defined front section, combined with the low windscreen offered as standard, guarantee adequate protection, especially in extra-urban transfers. Furthermore, as a couple the passenger can count on a large and well-padded saddle section, which guarantees a comfortable seat. The wide saddle allows a comfortable seat even on long journeys and allows you to have a lot of space available for your legs, in fact, given its very large dimensions it is a good vehicle, even for sufficiently long journeys. After a week of city work, you can then use the X-Town 125 for weekends away. The X-Town is spacious and protective, it protects well from rain and cold, if you want to use it all year round. The protection from the air is good and the legs are well sheltered behind the shield.

The rear shock absorbers, adjustable to 5 positions, allow you to filter the roughness of the road surface, guaranteeing good road holding and the Kg in running order).

Braking is also promoted, given that the single 260 mm front disc brakes the not very light 125 very well, thanks also to the presence of a CBS system, which integrally manages the action of the front and rear and which allows the braking distance to be significantly reduced, offering good modulation and readiness, as well as short braking distances.

Kymco_XTown_125_pss_2017_16

On the roughest roads we appreciated the suspensions, which guarantee a decent job of absorption, although in our opinion we would have preferred a softer standard setting (which can however be obtained by adjusting the shock absorbers), as on more pronounced potholes there is a slightly less responsive response. dry.

The frame is made of steel tubes and pressed plates, with a fork with 37 mm stanchions, allows you to enter curves and roundabouts with determination. By setting its ideal trajectory even above 90 km/h, it remains perfectly planted on the ground, guaranteeing stability and safety even at the highest speeds. The wheels are 14" at the front and 13" at the rear, with tyre 150/70 rear, 120/80 front. A choice that guarantees a pleasant but at the same time safe ride.

Price and consumption:

rating: ★★★★☆

The price is a bit demanding, but it is also perfect for extra-urban travel
Kymco_XTown_125_pss_2017_05

The Kymco Its typical customer is a user with only a B driving license, who does not want to limit himself to a small scooter, but who instead demands the comfort and characteristics of a maxi. The Then when you unleash it in the city or in everyday use, it is appreciated for its easy handling and practicality, without disappointing too much even from a performance point of view.

Available at brand dealerships in two colours, matt cevedale white or matt odolo black, the X-Town 125i CBS is priced at 4.250 €, ex dealer and is Kymco's under 125 flagship. They are 300 euros less than the 300, demonstrating the fact that it is not chosen so much to save money, but mainly to obtain the advantages linked to its reduced displacement. The price drops to 3.650, if you take advantage of the promotion "4 GOOD REASONS TO CHOOSE KYMCO“, which in fact includes a contribution of 600 euros. As for consumption, the generous 13 liter tank guarantees a very respectable autonomy, theoretically even over 400 km, given the figure declared in the WMTC cycle, of 31 km/l. In our road test, without saving too much on its single-cylinder, we found a consumption consistent with what was declared by the company, without ever going below the threshold of 25 km/l.
