Honda X-ADV 2018, the update of a success [ROAD TEST]

After the successful debut last year, improvements and new features are arriving

Honda X ADV 2018 - Important updates arrive for the two-wheeled crossover from the golden-wing house, such as two-level traction control and G mode for off-roading

Honda X-ADV: four letters that mark a great success for the Japanese company. From its first time in the form of a concept, up to the over 3.700 examples sold in Italy in 2017. We are talking about a completely new vehicle, defined by some as the first two-wheeled SUV, capable of tackling any route, but with the practicality of a scooter, perfect both on dirt roads and for everyday travel. The new model of Honda X-ADV for the 2018, in terms of security, presents two important updates: the adoption of HSTC traction control (Honda Selectable Torque Control) with 2 levels and can be deactivated and the G mode, designed for the most extreme riders who want to go offroad.

Furthermore Honda X-ADV is now available in one 35 kW version, dedicated to customers with driving license A2. This version also benefits from a special kit, which provides the possibility of restoring it to full power. In technical terms the difference in driving is really minimal, as in the sprint from 0-100 meters the time is even identical. The MY2018, like the previous X-ADV, as well as the entire NC family, uses the now famous gearbox DCT double clutch, which in recent years has proven increasingly interesting for fans of the golden wing. An exclusivity that, even today, only Honda is able to offer and it is a transmission that equips some of the best-selling motorcycles in Italy, such as, for example, the Integra and all the models that revolve around the platform of the NC 750 range, based on the parallel twin-cylinder engine. On scooters, the DCT (Dual Clutch Transmission) is the only possible solution, on motorbikes it is an alternative to a classic 6-speed manual, with the clutch lever we are used to.

The design in perfect rally style it was conceived and designed by the Honda style center in Rome. It is the first example of a two-wheeled crossover (or SUV), capable of tackling any route, maintaining the qualities for which it was designed and an adventurous spirit. The lines are characterized by a "lively" aesthetic, while protection from the wind is guaranteed with the windshield, which can be manually adjusted to 5 positions. The difference between the two extreme positions is 136 mm, with a variation of 11° between the lowest and highest points. The X-ADV is recognizable even in the middle of the night, thanks to the split front light unit with LED lights, while for the rear it has a double lens fully integrated with the structure of the scooter's tail. The instrument panel, also with a rally-raid motorcycle look, is digitala LCD display and offers all the data necessary to keep everything under control, from the circular tachometer, to the large speedometer and the gear indicator. For a practical vehicle, a 21 liter underseat cannot be missing, which can accommodate a full-face helmet, illuminated by a small LED and with a 12 V socket, to recharge the devices we usually carry with us.

However, despite its massive appearance, the X-ADV it is equipped, like a real respectable enduro motorbike, with hand guards and an aluminum engine guard which, in the case of demanding routes, protect the mechanics of the vehicle and the hands of its rider from stones and blows. The final transmission is protected by a generous casing, which protects it from dirt and accidental impacts. On a model like this the very practical and convenient Smart Key could not be missing, which allows you to turn on your X-ADV by keeping it in your pocket or in any case within a 2 meter radius. The riding position is comfortable, thanks to the padded saddle which is 820 mm from the ground and the large handlebar grip, which is 910 mm high, to give excellent directionality and stability on any type of terrain.

Motor

The engine is the highly efficient 745 cc long-stroke parallel twin. The power and torque values, which guarantee acceleration and vigorous acceleration, are equal to 55 HP at 6.250 rpm and 68 Nm at 4.750 rpm, assisted by the DCT gearbox, with which it interacts optimally. The main new features of this new Honda X-ADV 2018, concern the rev limiter moved by 900 rpm higher (therefore at 7.500), which allow for greater acceleration, especially when the rider uses the "MT" (Manual Transmission) or sporty "S" mode. To make driving fun and comfortable at the same time, the X-ADV is equipped with two countershafts, which reduce vibrations to a minimum. This technologically advanced engine was designed with the camshaft also moving the water pump and one of these two countershafts also driving the oil pump. Another novelty, for off-road driving and on slippery surfaces, is the adoption of traction control HSTC at 2 levels. Level 2 is the default, while level 1 is more suitable for driving on slippery surfaces, such as dirt and mud. Both levels can be excluded by holding down the button on the handlebar for a long time. Finally the Honda DCT gearbox, which uses two coaxial clutches, one for starts and odd gears, the other for even gears. This system is equipped with two automatic modes (AT) and a mode for manual gear changes (MT), via the buttons on the left side of the handlebar. For relaxed driving, with a reduction in consumption, the drive mode (D) is the most suitable, while the sport modes (S) are suitable for the more "geeks", or in any case for those situations in which a more sporty. And if we wanted to tackle an overtaking, or a hairpin bend in a higher or lower gear, there's no need to worry. You act directly on the buttons on the handlebar, whatever the driving mode is set at that moment. The DCT gearbox is then able to recognize uphill and downhill gradients, allowing the twin-cylinder to make the most of every single gear, maintaining the appropriate ratio during the stretch of road being tackled.

Nothing new so far, but from this year, as already happens on the Africa Twin, the new X-ADV can also benefit from the “G” mode. It's not the magic button for women, don't worry, we're talking about a mode specifically dedicated to off-road driving, which allows maximum traction, reducing clutch slippage while driving.

Frame and chassis.
The robust tubular structure of the Speaking of numbers, the Honda X-ADV has a steering inclination of 27°, trail equal to 104 mm, with a wheelbase of 1.590. What is certain is that the 2-wheeled SUV is agile, as well as being able to turn in just 2,8 metres. If instead we wanted to go looking for dirt roads outside the city, he is ready for anything. We don't have to worry, the long travel suspension (153,5 mm at the front and 150 mm at the rear) ensures a ground clearance of 162 mm. The 41 mm upside-down fork is adjustable in preload and rebound, while the rear monoshock (with Pro-Link progressive linkage) only features spring preload calibration. The 2018 Honda The spoked rims are fitted with 17/15 and 120/70 tyres. A large section, to facilitate full control on dirt roads.

The X-ADV weighs 239 kg, with a full tank of petrol. As regards the braking system, at the front we find 296 mm discs, accompanied by 4-piston radial calipers from Nissin, while for the rear the choice fell on a 240 mm disc, which acts with a single caliper piston. For those who want to give an even more adventurous style to the aerodynamic protection, deflectors are available. We then find customized finishes, such as metal footboards, impact bars and LED fog lights.

Our test

It's not an absolute novelty, given that last year we tried it as a preview at the press presentation and then during the classic and longer road test, but every time the curiosity towards this scooter / motorbike which is certainly one of a kind is great. Once we got on the saddle we immediately found ourselves at ease, with the wide handlebars and our feet resting well on the ground (the saddle is placed 820 mm from the ground). The central tunnel requires you to climb over to get on, just like a motorbike. However, comfort is very high. Among the things that are most striking, there is undoubtedly the protection with the screen adjustable to 5 positions and the large front shield, which protects our legs.

The X-ADV, both on the road and during excursions along paths or dirt roads, offers a relaxed sitting position, but also favors standing riding, thanks to the optional enduro footrests on the sides. In a straight line the vibrations are minimal and the comfort is truly remarkable, also protecting the rider's back, which is no small feat. Starting with the Smart Key is very easy and eliminates the hassle of inserting the key. The dashboard is large, easy to read and refined in every detail.

Let's start with the Drive mode, the most suitable for urban travel and more relaxed use. The power delivery is very smooth and allows us to fully turn the throttle knob, without any fear. Once you have achieved the right feeling you immediately feel the agility of this Honda X-ADV. Stability is excellent on any terrain, the general sensation is that of greater stability in all driving conditions as already tested in Sardinia last year, it absorbs potholes and uneven road surfaces and the standard suspension calibration is very spot on, transmitting the right security.

Honda_X-ADV_MY18_13

The engine is the well-known 745 cc long-stroke parallel twin, which now gains 900 rpm, now reaching the threshold of 7.500. This increases driving pleasure when using all the power available, with the throttle fully open and with the sportier gearbox modes, or using manual gear. In automatic mode, the gear shift is always "right", it is always able to better read the driver's intentions and the context of use, especially if we think of the first versions of the DCT. The real novelty is the "G" mode, which is dedicated to off road (you can insert a line in speech...), just like on the Africa Twin. As well as being ideal for maximizing fuel efficiency, the DCT is now a perfect partner to guarantee the best traction on slippery or dirt surfaces, making driving in these contexts easier and more accessible to everyone.

However, the chassis remains unchanged, appreciated and always up to the task. In changes of direction the X-ADV is very responsive, with simple insertion, especially if well supported with the movement of the body. The excellent weight balance allows you to manage the huge weight, even without too much physical riding, thanks to a perfect balance between chassis and electronics. The new "HSTC" traction control facilitates this sensation, making driving safer and at the same time faster when cornering. With the control off, G mode makes traverse easier and more manageable for those who want to try their hand at it. Braking is good, firm but soft enough, with limited ABS action, perfect and never invasive.

In conclusion, the new Honda decidedly special.
