For 2012 the PCX125 is equipped with the new Honda eSP (enhanced Smart Power) engine, a liquid-cooled single-cylinder 4-stroke designed to offer maximum durability, lower consumption, improved power and torque and also quieter operation. In 2006, Honda was the first manufacturer to announce a voluntary reduction in CO2 emissions per unit on all its products (and related production facilities); in this sense the PCX125 represents a decisive step forward, both in terms of overall efficiency and ecological commitment.

1. Introduction

In the 60s and 70s, Honda played an important role in the development of two-wheeled transport thanks to the legendary C50 Super Cub, a scooter capable of adapting to any lifestyle and driving style. From the smallest urban models to maxi scooters, Honda offers the ideal two-wheeled solution for any need. All models share great build quality, advanced technology and solid reliability: Honda's distinctive features.

From the first C50 Super Cub to today, many things have changed, but the real strengths have remained: practicality, load capacity, low operating costs and that fun sense of independence that only two wheels can offer

2. Model overview

The PCX125 was the best-selling two-wheeler in Europe in 2011, with over 23.000 units. The elegant and modern style combined with the attractive look of maxi scooters, the rigid and reliable frame which gives great stability and the comfort combined with the road holding guaranteed by the excellent suspensions, make this scooter fun and safe to use every day.

The PCX125 therefore offers all the fundamental features for a small scooter: it is practical, attractive and above all fun.

3. Main features

3.1 Motor

The factors that contributed to the development of Honda's latest generation 125 cc engine are various: maximum resistance with excellent performance, quieter operation, CO emissions2 reduced and savings in consumption.

The 4-stroke, single-cylinder, 2-valve, liquid-cooled engine uses low-friction technology for greater efficiency in terms of power and savings. Honda looks at this new engine from a global perspective: the reduced dimensions and overall weight offer the compactness necessary for adaptation to a wide range of two-wheeled vehicles, present and future.

A key factor in increasing the efficiency of the new engine is the use of low-friction technologies:

  • An offset cylinder reduces friction caused by contact between the piston and the cylinder wall.
  • The weight of the piston has been reduced using CAE (Computer Aided Engineering) analysis.
  • The spiked cylinder liner on the outer surface reduces oil consumption and ensures better cooling.
  • To reduce friction on the camshaft rocker arm, a shell-type needle bearing is used instead. Small, lightweight rollers work in synergy with an optimized cam profile and valve spring load.
  • The radiant mass is 1,5 times more efficient, allowing the use of a smaller, lighter cooling fan with a 30% reduction in friction losses.*
  • These internal modifications reduce losses due to oil agitation and allow a 25% decrease in transmission oil capacity. *
  • Friction losses within the transmission system have also been reduced by 20% (at 50 km/h), thanks to the use of bearings designed to support the specific loads to which they are individually subjected.*

A compact combustion chamber and PGM-FI fuel injection system enable optimal combustion speed and cooling performance, adapting torque characteristics to the rpm range typically used by the driver of a 125cc scooter. The extremely smooth profile intake duct facilitates the flow of the air/fuel mixture while the optimized timing in combination with an efficient cooling system of the combustion chamber improves the anti-knock characteristics.

Smooth and extremely quiet starting is guaranteed by the ACG electronic starter and a decompression mechanism that reduces starting resistance caused by compression.

The "Start&Stop" function to stop the engine at idle can be deactivated using the relevant switch located on the right side of the handlebar. Once activated, if the engine idles for 3 seconds, it is automatically turned off and then restarted immediately as soon as the accelerator knob is turned.

The V-Matic continuously variable transmission uses a silent and resistant belt made of a new high-elasticity rubber. Exceptionally efficient in transmitting power to the rear wheel, it guarantees significantly lower fuel consumption. The PCX125 is now capable of reaching 47,4 km/l (according to the WMTC standard), therefore offering a range of 280 km thanks to the 5,9 liter fuel tank.

3.2 Cycling

A durable tubular steel frame with lower dorsal beam allows for a seat low to the ground (761 mm) while the 1.305 mm wheelbase and non-rigid steering geometry help make riding stable and easy. The very small turning radius of 1,98 m allows agile maneuvers even in the tightest spaces while the 14" die-cast aluminum wheels give greater stability and driving safety.

The combined braking system effectively distributes the applied force between the 220 mm front disc brake with three-piston caliper and the robust 130 mm rear drum brake, for a fluid and progressive braking action and effective performance even on surfaces more insidious.

3.3 Equipment

The lockable compartment under the saddle can accommodate a full-face helmet while on the front shield there is a practical, easily accessible storage compartment. A rear rack is available as standard which can hold a 26 liter glove box (optional). Always paying maximum attention to comfort, the saddle incorporates support for the rider's back and generous space available for the passenger. The fully featured dashboard houses a speedometer (the needle of which makes a complete revolution of the dial during start-up), a fuel level indicator, some service lights and the Start&Stop function light.

3.4 Styling

The PCX125 is practical but with an elegant and trendy look: the harmonious lines of the fairing offer a modern and dynamic image, perfect for the city, while the front shield together with the smoked windshield guarantee maximum protection for the rider. Complementing a comfortable seat, elongated footpegs provide ample space to stretch your legs. The dual headlight design is emphasized by elegant, upward-sloping turn signals for a truly exclusive front end appearance.
