The comparison between the two new 'averages' of the Golden Wing house

We had seen the new 'mediums' from Honda at EICMA 2018, but now they are finally among us. We are talking about the sporty CBR650R and the naked CB650R, similar philosophies for two poles apart products. They are two bikes that send their respective F versions into retirement.

Both models share the same powertrain. It is a 4 cc inline 649-cylinder engine. The power has increased compared to the old version, but the strong point is the delivery, which is now more full-bodied and present, with a 5% increase above 10.000 rpm. This translates into smooth and linear power delivery, but which becomes bad when you increase the speed. This is due to several new updates, including a new piston design and an increase in the compression ratio from 11,4 to 11,6:1. The diameter of the exhaust manifold has also been revised, enlarged and oriented upwards. However, the increase in performance is not the only positive aspect, in fact, the general performance of the engine also improves and therefore consumption is reduced. What makes the difference between the two models is the position of the air box vents. On the CBR650R these are two front ducts, while on the CB650R they are located on the sides of the tank. Both models also feature an assisted clutch with anti-hopping and there is also HSTC (Honda Selectable Torque Control) traction control, which prevents the rear wheel from slipping during acceleration. Both are also available in a 35 kW version for A2 license holders.

The two models also have in common the suspension department which relies on a 41 mm inverted Showa SFF (Separate Fork Function) fork at the front, while at the rear the spring is adjustable in preload to 7 positions, working directly linked to the swingarm in aluminum with differentiated arms. The crushing system has been entirely revised and upgraded compared to the F version. At the front there are 310 mm floating discs and 4-piston radially mounted calipers, while at the rear a single-piston caliper acts on a 240 mm disc.

The line is inspired by the 'big sister' Fireblade, but the smaller engine, therefore reduced consumption, and a chassis that promises great handling, make it a motorbike for everyday life and not just for 'assaulting' the curbs. The weight has dropped by 6kg, reaching 207kg, thanks to the numerous interventions carried out on the frame, now stiffer around the steerer tube and more flexible in the descending sections, to accommodate the new fork. The riding position has also been revised, now more loaded on the front. The clip-on handlebars have been positioned 30 mm further forward while the footrests have been slightly moved back and raised. The ground clearance remained unchanged. The CBR650R is already in dealerships in the colors: Grand Prix Red and Mat Gunpowder Black Metallic at the price of 8.900,00 euros

The task of the new CB650R will not be simple: to send the CB650Fs into retirement. the new bike features the distinctive features of the Neo Sports Café style with minimalist lines designed to show off the muscles. Compared to the F version, the riding position has been revised, the handlebars have been moved 13mm forward and lowered by 8mm, while the footrests have been slightly moved back and raised. The new driving position, in addition to being more 'aggressive', makes driving on paths full of curves more convenient and comfortable. The overall weight of the bike has been reduced overall thanks to some measures, such as the swingarm plates which are molded rather than forged, a difference which has made it possible to save almost two kg. The weight with a full tank is 202 kg. The inclination of the steering head is set to 25,5°, with a trail of 101 mm and a wheelbase of 1.450 mm. The CB 650R is already in dealerships in the colors: Graphite Black, Candy Chromosphere Red, Matt Crypton Silver Metallic and Matt Jeans Blue Metallic at the price of 7.990 euros.
