Burian Is it complicating your week's plans? The bad weather that is affecting all of Central-Northern Italy with heavy rain, snowfall at low altitude and freezing arctic winds is also having repercussions on the road system and the regulations that regulate it.

In short, in these days of severe bad weather, leaving your scooter or motorbike in the garage will be good for your health, but also for your pockets. A national decree, in fact, imposes a stop on motorcycles and mopeds, even if they have winter tyres. The stop is mandatory in the event of snow or ice on the roads or snowfall in progress, as specified by the Ministerial Directive of 16 January 2013 on road traffic in winter and in the event of a snow emergency. This directive, in prescribing the obligation to have winter tires or chains on board during the period between 15 November and 15 April. The Highway Code, in regulating circulation outside inhabited centers (article 6) as well as in inhabited centers (article 7), prescribes the rules for the adoption of measures to suspend circulation, generically establishing the administrative sanctions incurred by those who do not complies with suspension or traffic ban measures. Therefore, be careful not to be misled by the most recent circular from the Ministry of Transport n. 12424-DIV3-C of 27 May 2016 which, similarly to what is prescribed for cars, reiterates that motorcycles and mopeds can also fit, without any obligation, “M + S” type tires with a lower speed code than that shown on the registration document (provided that it is not lower than M 130 km/h) without the need to update the registration document. Regardless of the type of tire fitted, the circulation ban for mopeds and motorcycles remains in place in the presence of snow or ice on the road or during snowfall.

The Highway Code, for violators, establishes administrative penalties that vary from 85 to 338 euros.
