The thesis project, carried out in collaboration with Ducati, of the three-year post-diploma course in Transportation Design - BYT (Bike, Yacht and Train Design) of the 2009/2010 school year at the IED in Turin has translated into a great opportunity to students and for the motorcycling world.

Ducati, for its part, has started an investigation aimed at defining new catchment areas. The students of the European Institute of Design in Turin, consequently, played the role of hypothetical customers to convey to the Borgo Panigale company the idea of how the motorcycle product and Ducati itself are perceived outside of the dynamics of company and how the motorcycle industry could change.

The projects created by IED students were born from the in-depth study of the aesthetic characteristics of motorcycles. The beardless pencils were asked to identify the tangible signs of the Ducatis of tomorrow, applying them to the design of an entry-level motorcycle. The students developed their project under the supervision of Luigi Giampaolo, Co-coordinator of the three-year post-diploma course in Transportation Design, and Andrea Ferraresi, Director of the Ducati Style Centre.

During the first part of the study, the ten chosen designers individually concretized their concept ideas and related sketches. Subsequently, five were identified, on which the students worked together, in pairs, to follow their creation on a 1:4 scale.

Among the five projects in competition, Ducati showed the greatest interest in the one with the correct dose of style attributable to the Borgo Panigale maison, creativity and innovation: Twins by Simone Buonpensiere and Daniele Mazzon, which was created in 1:1 scale. Ducati Twins is a supermotard capable of satisfying the needs of a large customer base.

The remaining Ducati concepts were presented virtually. To carry out the project, the students of the IED in Turin were asked to arbitrarily consider an existing mechanical layout among those of Ducati.
