Ducati Multistrada V4 Rally: a new travel idea [PHOTO]

30 liter tank and an unprecedented extended deactivation strategy

Protagonist of the third episode of web series Ducati World Première 2023 and the Ducati Multistrada V4 Rally, new proposal of the panoramic Multistrada signed by the Borgo Panigale company and designed for motorcyclists who love to travel far and wide.

Associated fittings and accessories

There are two matching colours: Ducati Red e Brushed Aluminum & Matt Black, in this last case with visible brushed aluminum tank. In any case i rims are spoked with black channel.
There are three setups: AdventureRadar with Adaptive Cruise Control and Blind Spot Detection functionality; Adventure Travel & Radar with heated grips and seats, plus aluminum side cases; Therefore full adventure which together with the aforementioned equipment also includes a carbon fiber front mudguard and an approved Akrapovič silencer.
The range of matching accessories is varied and, together with different saddles designed to meet the needs of motorcyclists and passengers, includes the choice of various types of windshield, additional LED headlights, a steel tube engine guard, but also a satellite navigator with dedicated support for those who want to go off-road and various transport solutions, designed for both the tank and the rear plate.
In case you want to strengthen the aesthetics, giving a sportier connotation, we also highlight various parts of the carbon fiber covering, dynamic LED indicators, brake and clutch fluid reservoirs machined from solid and aluminum levers and footrests machined from solid.
Clothing has also been developed in order to fully enjoy the touring qualities of the model. The Strada C5 suit is developed with a robust and modular stretch fabric in thermal protection, highlighting a detachable internal Gore-Tex® membrane and an internal down jacket that can also be used alone, once you leave the motorbike.
The Atacama C2 suit, then, includes detachable sleeves, areas dedicated to ventilation and three independent layers, also considering the thermal lining and the waterproof membrane.

Technique and technology

The new Ducati Multistrada V4 Rally it is equipped with a proven aluminum monocoque frame, which is combined with a double-sided shell-cast aluminum swingarm. There is a new 30-litre aluminum tank which promises high autonomy.
According to the information, the tubeless spoked rims are redefined and lightened to intensify the dynamic qualities.
The motorbike is designed to travel even as a couple with optimized overall comfort. A result also linked to a redesigned and enlarged windscreen 40 millimeters in height and 20 mm in width, as well as an elongated tail with a rear-mounted suitcase attachment, so as to offer more space in the passenger's leg area. We also highlight the presence of footrests with larger rubber inserts, in order to reduce the level of vibrations.
Given the availability of saddles placed at different heights for the pilot and for the passenger and a lowered suspension kit, the template can be customized according to needs, as already mentioned. A function Minimum Preload, already adopted on Multistrada V4 S in 2022, it allows the rider to lower the bike during stops and low-speed movements, attenuating the shock absorber preload. Furthermore, a function is introduced Easy lift which, by opening the suspension hydraulics at the key-on, mitigates the effort required to lift the vehicle from the side stand, through the compression of the fork and shock absorber. To facilitate loading and unloading of side cases and any maintenance on long journeys away from home, the central stand is fitted as standard.
The adventurous character of the new Ducati Multistrada V4 Rally is highlighted by the semi-active suspension with increased travel at 200 mm, obtaining greater ground clearance, but also more extended footrests for the rider, a more streamlined profile with a removable rubber insert, a Skyhook DSS EVO control strategy refined and a Power Mode dedicated to off-roading.

In total i Riding Modes there are four, varying between Sport, Touring, Urban ed Enduro, with a decisive evolution of the latter modality. Opting for the Enduro Riding Mode calls for a Dedicated Power Mode, as mentioned, which limits the power to 114 horsepower with an incisive response. The DSS Evolution acts according to an off-road use logic with a specific load mode icon, represented by an off-road helmet. There is also a transition to a lower level of the intervention provided by the DTC and DWC is deactivated like theABS on the rear wheel. Also inhibit the cornering functionality and rear lift detection.
The instrumentation consists of one 6,5 inch color TFT display with map navigation functionality, thanks to the application Ducati Connect.
The innovative technology linked to the Multistrada V4 proposal is represented by a front and rear radar system to support the Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) e Blind Spot Detection (BSD).
To support active safety, the new model also integratesABS cornering, already mentioned, which allows the use of the system's braking power even when leaning, as well as Ducati Wheelie Control (DWC) and Ducati Traction Control (DTC), these too already mentioned previously, therefore the Ducati Cornering Lights (DCL) which intensify visibility during the evening hours by illuminating the inside of the curves. A series of systems associated with inertial platform (IMU) to make each intervention efficient, based on the lean angle and pitch.
We also highlight a feature Self leveling, in order to have a constant set-up as the driver, passenger and luggage configuration changes, keeping the characteristics of the vehicle unchanged.

Propulsive part

The heart is one V4 Grandtourism da 1.158 cc, a high-performance engine that in light of a total weight of just 66,7 kg, is a reference in the category. There is no shortage of sophisticated solutions, for example the torque curves dedicated to each individual gear and a counter-rotating crankshaft, the result of the experience gained by Ducati Corse in MotoGP, which counteracts the gyroscopic inertia of the wheels.
Among the most interesting innovations also stands out anovel extended deactivation strategy of the rear row, introduced on this model. A technical solution that debuts for the first time on a production motorcycle. Together with the damping of the rear cylinders at idle when the bike is stationary, a feature that is present on the Multistrada V4, the V4 Granturismo engine now keeps the rear bank deactivated in other operating conditions. An interesting aspect when considering consumption and emissions.
According to the new strategy, deactivation also occurs while moving, then as the speed increases or above a certain power, called through the accelerator knob, the rear cylinders are reactivated, giving space to the character of the engine. The system is operational in all Riding Modes.
The expressed power reaches i 170 horses (125 kW) at 10.750 rpm with 121 Nm (12,3 kgm) of torque at 8.750 rpm.

Proposal

The new model is expected in dealerships since February 2023, in the two colors already indicated.
