Ducati is for sale, but BMW backs out
The announcement made by Andrea Bonomi in the Financial Times
News that will shock the world of two wheels. The Bonomi family, in fact, he intends to sell Ducati, perhaps the most famous Italian motorcycle brand in the world, at least as far as high-performance vehicles are concerned. The operation will be conducted by investindustrial, the company owned by the Bonomi e family which in 2006 had brought the Borgo Panigale red bike back into "Italian hands" after ten years of American management. It was Andrea Bonomi himself who announced the project to the Financial Times. «Ducati is currently a perfect company – were his words – but for further growth it needs a world-class industrial partner. This year we will work to find that partner. "
So the idea is to internationalize at most the brand, an operation for which the easiest route would be to sell it to a large foreign group. Some notable names have already made themselves heard abroad, such as i German giants Volkswagen and BMW. The latter house, however, released some statements through its spokesperson to Bloomberg, stating that it is not currently interested in purchasing the Italian manufacturer. The Indian motorcycle group Mahindra also reportedly showed interest in entering into the deal. At the moment, however, it appears too early to make any assumptions about potential buyers.
It is a historical step, which arrives after 86 years of motorcycle history. Ducati in particular has linked its name closely to Italian tradition, becoming almost synonymous with Italian racing motorcycles abroad. In the sports two-wheel market the Borgo Panigale company controls 10,5% of the market with sales of around 42.000 units per year.
