2019 started with a very positive trend for the two-wheeler market. January and February already ended on a positive note, but a sharp acceleration arrived in March. Registrations number a total of 25.083 vehicles, marking an increase of +27,1% in the third month of the year compared to the same month of 2018. It should be remembered that in the same period, a year ago, the situation was not rosy, with scooters showing a loss of -20,5%.

In the first quarter of 2018, registrations in Italy totaled 54.858 vehicles (scooters and motorcycles >50cc), with a growth of +18,9% compared to the first three months of 2018. Scooter registrations reached 27.900 vehicles + 21,9% while motorcycles equal to 26.958 units recorded a +15,9%. The progressive data for mopeds (50cc vehicles) achieved 3.696 registrations in the quarter equal to -2,9%. The total of motorized two-wheelers (registered +2cc) reaches 50 vehicles equal to +58.554%.

Scooters from 300 to 500cc once again continue to drive the two-wheel sector, thanks to 11.491 units and an increase of +47,7%. In second place were the 125cc with 9.434 units equal to +17,2%. The 150-250cc models were stable, with 4.668 units and +0,3%. Only maxi scooters larger than 500cc showed a slight decline with 2.307 registrations equal to -3,7% compared to last year. For motorbikes, however, registrations of 1000 cc are growing, marking a +6,5%, while motorbikes between 800 and 1.000 cc and between 300 and 600cc are recording mind-boggling numbers. The former grew by +34%, while the medium-small ones grew by +13,6%. The 125 cc ones are also doing well, while the small ones between 150 and 250 cc are decreasing.

These are the words of Andrea Dell'Orto, President of Confindustria ANCMA (National Association of Cycle and Motorcycle Accessories): "In an automotive panorama that sees declining indicators, the two-wheeler sector continues to buck the trend with a significant recovery in volumes sales considered more than satisfactory. In March there was an increase of over 2% which bodes well for the rest of the year. We hope that the general economic scenario, which is particularly uncertain today, can improve to counteract the forecasts of stagnation. The demand for two-wheelers remains strong, however if public and private investments do not restart we risk a significant drop in confidence. As for 27-wheel users, they have postponed replacement purchases for years and in fact the fleet on the road has aged, but today the renewal can no longer be deferred. Furthermore, we note a recovery of A licenses obtained, with a good concentration between 2 and 2 years old which indicates a new approach to 16 wheels also by the younger classes. The priority objective is to improve the characteristics of the fleet in circulation with updated, safer and low-emission vehicles. We follow the development of electric motors with interest, but the incentives announced are not yet operational due to the lack of the implementing decree. In theory the incentives should have been triggered at the beginning of the year, but now the application becomes urgent to meet the peak of seasonality, overcoming the bureaucratic obstacles."
