Yes to preferential lanes for motorbikes and to the improvement of the city road surface: this is the summary of the press release issued by Confindustria ANCMA, the National Cycle, Motorcycle and Accessories Association, following some statements by the Mayor of the Municipality of Milan reported in the press this morning on the possibility of excluding motorbikes from the preferential lanes in the city due to the accidents that occur.

Confindustria ANCMA: the press release

"It is an eventuality that worries us and that does not solve the problem of accidents involving motorcyclists. Traveling on two wheels now represents a central and positive element in urban mobility due to the undoubted advantages in travel times and traffic decongestion. Excluding motorbikes from preferential lanes means not only forcing users to lose these prerogatives and even exposing them to greater risks, but also increasing traffic on normal urban roads. - it is read -. The opening of preferential lanes for two-wheelers is a widespread practice in many European metropolises such as London, Barcelona and Stockholm and constitutes an added value. The e-SUM – European Safer Urban Motorcycling project, for example, highlights a significant reduction in the two-wheel accident rate of between 25% and 30%, without this having a negative impact on the length of travel times of the vehicles public".

"There is still a lack of certain data on accidents and victims in Milan's preferential lanes, but the need to intervene to improve the quality of the road surface is clearer, which together with the irresponsible conduct of motorists, often distracted by the use of mobile phones while driving, is the cause of falls. It is known that city routes are the most dangerous for two-wheel users, 40% of whom are victims of third parties and 30% victims of the infrastructures themselves. We also believe it is our duty to punish the individual behavior of the most irresponsible motorcyclists without penalizing all users. We hope – the press release ends – to be able to work in a collaborative spirit together with the municipal administration, especially to solve the problems generated in some points particularly at risk of accidents, with the aim of finding suitable solutions without penalizing users".
