BMW S 1000 R: the evolution of the Dynamic Roadster with a sporty character [PHOTO]

Power of 165 horsepower and weight of 199 kg (DIN)

A bold vision at first glance. Streamlined and at the same time muscular, the new roadster BMW S 1000 R. it is conceptually similar to the sports car S 1000 RR considering heart, technology and character.

Innovative features

The new headlight unit is distinctive LED with a main headlight offering optimized low-beam and high-beam beams. The rest of the lights, including the new directional sources, are also LED types. The indicators in the rear area are taken from the S 1000 RR with an integrated rear/brake light function, while the front indicators are present in the fork area. Further support when driving in the evening hours is the adaptive cornering light, a component of Headlight Pro offered as an option. It involves the addition of additional LED modules, as indicated.
Also adopted from the sporty S 1000 RR is the new instrument panel with particular attention to readability, together with the varied overview of information and functions. The TFT it can be managed via a multi-controller attached to the handlebars. The screen gives 6,5 inches, according to the indications, allows optimized viewing even in low light conditions. You can choose between customized screens for different needs, considering for example a Pure Ride screen with all the useful information for traditional road riding, with a further main screen dedicated to aspects such as lean angle, traction control and deceleration. There is also a Bluetooth smartphone interface for application-based arrow navigation. The optional M package offers a third main screen with a bar display and lap timer.
Among the present solutions we also mention Dynamic Traction Control DTC, ABS-Pro with optimization based on the lean angle and three driving modes: “Rain”, “Road” e “Dynamic”. The mode is also proposed “Dynamic Pro” configurable with a wide range of additional settings included in the optional “Riding Modes Pro”. In this case the exemplar is enriched with a function “Engine Brake” as part of the engine drag torque control (MSR) and a function “Power Wheelie”. As part of the “Riding Modes Pro” option, the solution Dynamic Brake Control (DBC) supports the driver in the event of emergency braking, always taking back information.

Technology

Reduced the weight of the frame with a slim design, as well as that of the entire model. Among the evident data is the weight loss of 6,5 kg per 199 kg weight (DIN) or 202 kg including the Comfort and Dynamic packages. The M package reduces the sample's figure by another 4,8 kg (2 kg with forged wheels / 3,7 kg with carbon fiber wheels).
There is also a reduction in the width of the bike in the knee contact area for a more relaxed riding position. The adjustable handlebar attachment supports then allow you to make ergonomic adjustments. Two positions available as standard: 0 mm / +10 mm towards the front and 10 mm raised handlebar supports as an option.
The frame and swingarm are based on the elements of the S 1000 RR and made lighter than those present on the previous example. In the frame Flex Frame the thruster has a much greater load-bearing function than before.
The lower truss swingarm was taken from the S 1000 RR and the monoshock thanks to the kinematics Full Floater Pro it is now present further away from the swingarm pivot and the engine. Solution that avoids the action of the heat deriving from the engine on the monoshock absorber, favoring greater stability of the operating temperature and a consistent damping response. Considering the swingarm, superior grip and reduced wear are indicated.

Motor

Together with a self-reinforcing slipper clutch, engine drag torque control (MSR) is listed as an option for the first time. A solution that prevents the rear wheel from losing grip due to sudden deceleration or downshifting via electronic control, as indicated. Among the highlighted aspects is also a lighter exhaust, considering the EU-5 regulation.
The inline four-cylinder engine based on the heart of the S 1000 RR generates 165 horses (121 kW) of power at 11.000 rpm, while the maximum torque of 114 Nm it is offered at 9.250 rpm with at least 90 Nm of torque transmitted from 5.500 to 12.000 rpm and more than 80 Nm already from 3.000 rpm, according to the information. The rotation range of the engine is wider as a function of driveability, favored as indicated by a linear torque curve. To reduce noise and consumption levels, in addition to the average rotation speed and in particular at cruising speeds in extra-urban areas, gears 4, 5 and 6 are longer.
