BMW Motorrad Vision AMBY: another idea of mobility between bikes and motorbikes [PHOTO]

Up to 25 km/h on cycle paths, maximum speed of 60 km/h

BMW Motorrad Vision AMBY represents a new interpretation of urban mobility, a new concept halfway between a bicycle and a motorcycle. One of five different ones Concept Vehicle linked to the BMW Group, on the occasion of the IAA Mobility 2021 event in Munich.

Part bike, part motorbike

AMBY indicates “Adaptive Mobility”, referring both to BMW Motorrad Vision AMBY, but also to the BMW i Vision AMBY. Diversified ideas of future mobility on two wheels. The examples are electrically powered and there are three speed levels: up to 25 km/h on cycle paths, up to 45 km/h on urban roads and up to a maximum speed of 60 km/h on multi-lane roads and outside. city. At higher speeds a helmet, license plate and driving license become necessary.
Speaking of BMW i Vision AMBY as a high-speed Pedelec, constant pedaling is required for the action of the electrical system, in the case of BMW Motorrad Vision AMBY the reaction is stimulated through the accelerator knob and there are also footrests instead pedals, which bring this vehicle closer to a motorcycle.

A technical design

The appearance of the BMW Motorrad Vision AMBY it refers to bicycles, but the potential it can express connects it to the motorcycle scene. A slim vehicle that suggests remarkable agility with a design that brings to mind the lively Enduro motorbikes.
Given the compactness of the technical part, the heart that animates its movement is enhanced by the mechanical setting. The colors and materials stand out, beyond the contrasting combination between a dark shade and a white one. Looking at the two sides, they have been defined differently. The word “AMBY” appears in the area where the drive unit appears, a stylized graphic on the covering of the energy accumulator.
However, the writing on the left gets additional depth from a colorful, iridescent drop shadow, while the writing on the right features no shadow. Under the battery there are also two iridescent elements. Furthermore, on the right side there are three small turquoise blue tubes, a detail that refers to the vehicle's electrical system.
Also interesting is the association between the Pixel Technoid font with the classic Serif font. On the right we return to the BMW Motorrad Design Studio in Munich, where the BMW Motorrad Vision AMBY originates. On the other side the letters “AMBY” also appear in Morse code, with dashes representing the dots. The different details define a unique graphic and a current style.

In its use of materials, the BMW Motorrad Vision AMBY also ties in with the other concept vehicles on display at IAA Mobility 2021: the BMW i Vision Circular and the BMW i Vision AMBY. The material used to cover the battery, referred to as "floating gray polymers", is also used in the bumper of the BMW i Vision Circular. An element in recycled plastic, reintroduced into the materials cycle at the end of the product's life. The seat features a material that is also used in the saddle of the BMW i Vision AMBY and in the tires of the BMW i Vision Circular. Resting on recycled plastic granulate and with a “Terrazzo” appearance, it signals the possible second existence of different materials. The seat itself is integrated at a height of 830 mm and represents a design element itself above the upper and ascending frame.
Speaking again about appearance, the massive tread on the 26-inch front wheel which fits a thinner tire and on the 24-inch rear wheel a more rounded tire are highlighted, as reported.
The energy storage unit and drive unit form a dark graphic block in the center of the chassis. The bicycle fork on the front wheel also has protections and appears massive. Also distinctive are the headlight with the BMW Motorrad U-shaped light signature and the double LED element in the rear area. As mentioned on the BMW Motorrad Vision AMBY there is an acceleration control on the handlebars and an empty weight of around 65 kg and a combined range of around 110 km according to WMTC.

Dynamic technology

THEapp developed allows you to activate the BMW Motorrad Vision AMBY, performs the function of a key with the identification options provided by the smartphone, such as Face ID. Basic functions and status information are offered as in the BMW App. Further developments can be provided remotely via over-the-air updates. Furthermore, the smartphone shown in the Vision Vehicle can be charged inductively on the magnetic holder in the driver's lower field of vision. Connectivity options would allow anti-theft protection and electronic engine immobilizer to be offered as basic functions.
The available speed modes are stored in the app on the connected smartphone, manually selecting the speed level, as well as highlighting the road detection by means of geofencing technology, allowing automatic adjustment of the maximum speed. At the moment there is no regulation on automatic speed limitation, behind the concept of AMBY vehicles there is the idea of stimulating the development of legislation that can regulate this type of technology.
La geofencing technology combined with the HERE detailed map service could provide the parameters to automatically manage speed levels and corresponding insurance coverage, as indicated. A technology that allows the vehicle to detect the type of road, cycle lane or restricted traffic zone travelled, so that the maximum permitted speed can be adjusted automatically. It would become a vehicle similar to an S-pedelec recalling the motorcycle scene. It is also emphasized: “The user cannot cancel the mode. The necessary license plate has an innovative display, so the mode selected at any time can be easily recognized and read by other road users.”
Further technological innovations are also hypothesized, an ABS system optimized to further increase safety, an automatic assistant for lighting, high beams or brake lights, a tire pressure monitoring system similar to the optional one for BMW motorbikes Group. Safety features could also include a distance radar with a range of up to 140 m, transmitting a visual and acoustic warning in the app when a vehicle is approaching from behind.
