Friends of the BMW Motorrad brand are celebrating the 30th anniversary of the GS models and BMW Motorrad itself is celebrating the BMW GS riders: at the “BMW Motorrad Days” event in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, guests' BMW GSs will be evaluated and awarded in the different categories.

BMW Motorrad's competition called “30 Years GS” takes place in three distinct classes: the oldest GS, the motorcycle with the highest mileage and the most original GS. The evaluation criteria include the chassis numbers, in the first class, and in the second the confirmation of the greatest mileage up to the moment of the pre-selection scheduled for July 3rd. With customized bikes, the jury, made up of well-known personalities from the history of GS such as Jutta Kleinschmidt, Hubert Auriol and Charley Boorman, will evaluate the creativity of the technical and aesthetic modifications.

All owners of BMW GS motorcycles, excluding BMW employees, can participate with their motorcycles. To join and register your motorbike for one of the three categories, simply arrive between 9 and 11 am on 3 July with the necessary documentation in the car parks set up for the BMW Motorrad Days event, next to the ice skating rink. BMW Motorrad specialists will then make a pre-selection of five bikes that will advance to the finals of each category. The chosen motorbikes will be presented in the Freestyle area from around 12,30 pm; after which the winners will be announced and the prizes awarded. The awards ceremony will be one of the highlights of the 30th anniversary celebrations of the BMW GS. In a special exhibition, BMW Classic will present the most significant moments from three decades of the GS to illustrate the success story that began with this large touring enduro motorcycle, which constituted a completely new motorcycle concept. The “BMW Classic Special Edition” magazine includes 62 pages of detailed information on the history and development of this innovative motorcycle.

The “BMW Motorrad Days” event represents a meeting place between tradition and innovation. For this reason, a new tent will be set up entirely dedicated to important safety issues. With “ConnectedRide”, BMW Motorrad researchers and engineers are developing various assistance systems, such as intersection assistance based on intercommunication between vehicles, which aim to increase safety in the future.

Visitors can experience first-hand the current state of development of BMW motorcycles. Training sessions are offered on the BMW GS and test rides will also be available for test rides on the BMW G 450 X and Husqvarna models. Of course, all other BMW Motorrad models can also be tested on longer test rides. Over 500 exclusive test rides can be booked in advance this year on the internet at www.bmw-motorrad.com/testride.

For beginners without a licence, BMW Motorrad offers trials in a designated area. With a little luck, even the dream of owning a brand new BMW motorcycle could come true. On Friday evening there will be a draw for the special BMW F 800 GS “30 Anni GS” models and on Saturday evening for the BMW R 1200 GS “30 Anni GS”.
The thrilling evolutions of the four-time world stunt-riding champion Chris Pfeiffer in the Freestyle Area are not recommended for anyone who wants to imitate them. On the "x track", you can admire off-road evolutions performed by famous enduro riders and mountain bike experts. Another prominent element will be the BMW Motorrad Motorsport Team, which once again in 2010 will participate in the Superbike World Championship with the BMW S 1000 RR. Recurring aspects of the BMW Motorrad Days event will be the “Classic Convoy”, which this year will take place on Friday, as well as the “Grand Motorcycle Convoy” which will take place on Saturday.

The accompanying program includes 60 international exhibitors showcasing their products and services, from customizations to accessories and travel, as well as on-track and off-road training opportunities. In collaboration with Metzeler, BMW Motorrad will offer a tire service.

The celebrations on Friday and Saturday, with live bands and DJs, have already achieved legendary fame. In 2010, the girl group WILDCATS will perform live for the first time. On Friday evening, entertainment will be provided by Gerry & Gary, Dreirad, Byron and DJ Moorat. Blechblos'n, Tommy and the Moonddogs, Byron and DJ Robert will perform on Saturday.

Adjacent to the event area, an area of 15.000 square meters is intended for camping. For guests who want to stay in hotels of different categories, it is advisable to book at bmw-motorrad@gapa.de.

A press conference for journalists dedicated to the theme “3 Years GS” will be held on Saturday 10,30 July at 30 am in the special tent set up for the event. Some important personalities from GS history will participate, including Jutta Kleinschmidt, Hubert Auriol and Charley Boorman. Kleinschmidt achieved numerous rally successes on the BMW R 100 GS; Auriol won the Dakar in 1981 and 1983 on a BMW GS; while Boorman undertook his fantastic motorcycle journeys with Ewan McGregor, journeys described in “Long Way Round” on a BMW R 1150 GS and in “Long Way Down” on a BMW R 1200 GS.
