Individual mobility is increasingly defined through sustainability. The BMW Group has accepted the challenges posed by a changing world and is developing series solutions to cover the mobility needs of the future. In its capacity as an integral part of the BMW Group, BMW Motorrad also deals with the problems of two-wheeled mobility and future customer needs. For this reason BMW Motorrad has decided to extend its activity, adding a new aspect, "Urban Mobility".

BMW Motorrad uses the advantages of almost ninety years of experience in the field of two-wheeled motor vehicles to develop innovative solutions and offer new approaches for commuting in the urban environment, also known as “commuting”.

By the end of the year, BMW Motorrad will establish the new “Urban Mobility” division and present two premium vehicles in the maxi-scooter segment. BMW maxi-scooters combine the functionality of a scooter with the driving pleasure of a motorcycle. The two vehicles will be powered by powerful and efficient two-cylinder petrol engines.

Based on the BMW Group's sustainability strategy, BMW Motorrad intends to introduce a premium offering in the field of electromobility in the near future. At the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt, BMW Motorrad presents the “BMW Concept e” design concept for the first time.

Innovative technology in the future series vehicle

The future series model will fully meet customers' mobility expectations placed on a two-wheeled vehicle. For example, the particular configuration of the propulsion system components and the vehicle geometry, typical of a scooter, will provide agile handling and a high degree of functionality.

BMW Motorrad uses the BMW Group's innovative electrical technology and in-depth know-how in the field of power electronics and battery technology. BMW's high voltage technology (> 60 Volt), characterized to meet the most stringent safety criteria, allows the creation of a vehicle with acceleration values typical of a maxi-scooter equipped with an internal combustion engine. The large storage capacity and an intelligent battery management system, as well as efficient energy recovery during braking, will ensure a real range of 100 kilometers in everyday driving. Furthermore, the BMW Motorrad engineers pursue the objective of providing continuous power and top speed which will allow safe overtaking maneuvers even when riding with two people on fast city roads.

The battery is rechargeable at normal home sockets used in Europe, the USA, Canada and Japan. A special charging station will not be needed. The charging time of a completely discharged battery will be less than three hours. Practical experiences with concept cars have shown that the battery only rarely discharges completely, so charging times will usually be even shorter.

In the long term, the future series vehicle will offer zero-emission daily driving in large cities.
