The foundation of the historic BMW Motorsport GmbH dates back to 1972, with the concentration of BMW's motorsport activities and the development of high-performance models and engines for competition. We start with the creation of the iconic BMW 3.0 CSL (CSL = Coupe Sport Light Construction) introduced in 1973 and fielded in the European Touring Car Championship in the same year. The color scheme consisting of blue, purple and red on a white background has become representative for BMW Motorsport. In the updated Blue, Dark Blue and Red variant it is still present today in the BMW M logo and on BMW M examples.

In addition to the successes with four wheels, there were also important results in two-wheel competitions already in the first decades of the company's activity. Names such as Ernst Jakob Henne and Georg “Schorsch” Meier were protagonists with BMW, specifically recalling the success of “Schorsch” Meier riding a supercharged BMW at the 1939 Senior Tourist Trophy.
75 years after "Schorsch" Meier's victory in the Senior TT, Michael Dunlop brought the colors of the Bavarian manufacturer back to the top in 2014, riding the exemplary BMW S 1000 RR. Even in the off-road sector, notable achievements can be remembered, such as those achieved by the official BMW GS driven by Hubert Auriol and Gaston Rahier at the Paris-Dakar Rally in the early XNUMXs.

The BMW M 1000 RR, presented as a world premiere in September 2020, represents the first M example of BMW Motorrad and the celebratory model is another step in this journey.
