ABS on motorcycles soon mandatory?

ABS on the motorcycle? “If mandatory it would reduce the mortality rate.” Exactly one could go below the threshold of “4.000 deaths per year”. The president of the IX Transport Commission of the Chamber Mario Valducci is convinced of this. The proposal is simple: provide incentives and benefits for those who purchase a motorbike equipped with the Antilock Braking System.
How many motorcyclists choose to equip their two-wheelers with systems that ensure better grip between rubber and asphalt and guarantee the maintaining the right trajectory? In Europe they reach 16%. The figure was revealed by Bosch Italia as part of the meeting “Motorcyclists and ABS. How it is perceived, how many would like it, how it can save lives", organized in collaboration with Motociclismo magazine and CSM International at the EICMA in Milan, the international motorcycle show currently taking place in Milan.
450 people were interviewed with at least 15 years of driving experience behind them and with 7.000 kilometers traveled per year with custom/cruisers, road enduros, naked/base, sports or touring/ST vehicles. If the data on the diffusion of ABS may appear bleak, signs of encouragement come from the level of satisfaction of motorcyclists. 96% are happy with it and are ready to suggest it to friends and acquaintances. The category of those who are wary would be made up of those who have never tested any system and drivers of custom and super sports cars.. Yet they too, as revealed by Bosch Italia, declare themselves certain of the close relationship between the number of accidents and the diffusion of devices that help improve behavior on the road.
The greatest resistance to the provision of ABS (or similar technologies) is to be found in the lack of habit or in the presumed lengthening of braking. Complaints that the promoters of the meeting return to the sender since these systems ensure braking in total safety and the reduction of braking distance.
